Is it a mistake to tell kids to be nice?

My most recent article for Kidspot touches a nerve. Our children have had a couple of incidences with bullies and to say it tipped our worlds upside down would be an understatement.

It made me wonder if we have somehow done a disservice to our children by teaching them to be 'nice'. Are they a target for bullies if they are seen to be someone who is always kind?
