Melbourne Writer's Festival 2014
A friend and I have signed up to a couple of Melbourne Writer's Festival Seminars.
Namely, Pathways to Publication and Writing for Children.
I really enjoy supporting anything to do with writing and these seminars always help me refocus my writing goals and often get the creative juices flowing. I have also been known to leave sessions feeling completely deflated at the reality of the industry and a tad peeved by all the square-framed-scarf-wearing-word-nerds who I'm competing with.
The last writer's session I attended was at the Wheeler Centre and also on the topic of publishing in the Children's Book field. At the end, there was the opportunity to ask questions of the guests. The rush on them resembled a Myer Boxing Day Sale. I was shocked by the physical push and shove of people who were so desperate to get a piece of these editors and publishers. I'd taken notes throughout and gained some useful information. Expanding my networks by wrestling a fellow writer out of my way was not a method I was comfortable with so I left them to it.
Hopefully the Writer's Festival will be a little more social and a little less ball-breaking.
